Calaboose African American History Museum

The Calaboose African American History Museum is located in the heart of San Marcos, Texas. The Calaboose was built in 1873 as the first Hays County Jail. Whensoldiers came to town for entertainment and to mingle with locals, they went to
racially segregated United Service Organizations (USO) facilities. The African American USO was in the Calaboose!

The mission of The Calaboose African American History Museum is tocollect, preserve, and interpret the history of African Americans in San
Marcos. They feature many useful exhibits including Lucious Jackson, Eddie Durham, and a few Military exhibits. Military exhibits feature Buffalo Soldiers of the Texas frontier
and the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II, the nation’s first black military
pilots.

The Calaboose museum works hard and tirelessly to make the African American history be known and come alive. They are working to partner with local organizations to bring to light the rich history of Texas. The locals know the importance and impact African Americans have had on history and strive to give credit to the local heroes.
